Hamburg / Baar, 30 October 2008 – In the Bavarian town of Baar near Augsburg, Conergy Deutschland GmbH inaugurated three thin-film solar parks of the megawatt class today, during a ceremony attended by German parliament members Gabriele Fograscher (SPD) and Hans Raidel (CSU). In addition to the 4.8 megawatt solar park in Baar, one of the world’s largest thin-film solar parks, the inauguration ceremony also saw the connection of photovoltaic plants in the neighbouring municipalities of Gebersdorf (2.4 MW) and Wiesenbach (1.8 MW) to the grid. In the presence of 70 invited guests from the world of business and politics, numerous journalists and interested local residents, the mayors Leonhard Kandler and Johann Settele officially commissioned the solar power stations with the symbolic pressing of the red button.
The Hamburg-based company Conergy Deutschland GmbH, a leading provider of products and solutions for all aspects of solar electricity generation, installed the solar parks at the three sites within the short space of just four months. All the parks have been planned and financed by EPURON GmbH, a sister company of Conergy Deutschland. In an open space measuring 30,000 square metres, Conergy and its partner companies have installed a total of 123,000 solar modules which produce more than nine gigawatt-hours of solar-generated electricity per year. This is enough to supply over 2,800 households in Baar, Gebersdorf, Wiesenbach and the surrounding area throughout the year with environmentally-friendly electricity – and this for the next 20 years! In the same period, the solar parks will reduce CO2 emissions by some 140,000 tons.
“Global climate change is one of the key challenges of the 21st century”, said Gabriele Fograscher, the parliamentary deputy (SPD) for the constituency of Aichach-Friedberg, in her speech. “Besides using our available resources sparingly and efficiently, the development of CO2-free technologies that permit the use of renewable energies is a particularly decisive factor”, emphasized the German politician. Hans Raidel, member of German parliament (CSU) in the constituency, also referred to the significance of regenerative energies for global climate protection and the creation of jobs: “Bavaria has long since realised the potential and the necessity for using renewable energies. As one of the largest photovoltaic markets in the world, the Free State of Bavaria has an international role model function in energy efficiency”, explained Raidel. In Bavaria, the proportion of renewable energies in the primary energy consumption accounts for just under eight per cent, a level unsurpassed throughout Germany. Last year, the Bavarian government also adopted the Climate Action Plan 2020, which aims at doubling the amount of climate-friendly renewable energies over the next ten years.
“We are delighted that, in implementing the project in Baar, we rank amongst the world’s largest providers and project developers of solar technology”, said Jochen Kirmaier, CEO of Conergy Deutschland. With the completion of the three solar parks inaugurated today, Conergy has now carried out 20 major photovoltaic projects in Bavaria. In the Augsburg region alone, no fewer than seven megawatt solar parks on a thin-film basis have been installed in the last two years. “Thanks to the high insolation values and the good political support also at regional level, Bavaria in particular offers excellent conditions for the development of photovoltaic technology”, said Kirmaier. “We would like to see many more municipalities following the example of Baar, Gebersdorf and Wiesenbach and making their contribution to the development of renewable energies.”
